This guest post is by Jay B. Ziskrout, Founder & CEO of Dympol. For more info on Dympol, read our Partner Feature here.

Over the years, I’ve worked on all sides of the music business ecosystem; in my youth as a performing drummer in SoCal, and then on the business side, building artist careers around the world for such labels as Mushroom (Australia), Enigma, Arista/BMG, Epitaph Europe, and my own Latin Alternative label, Grita! For the last ten years or so, however, I’ve been focused on running businesses like The CMJ Network and Dympol that develop media, events and/or technologies that can positively impact artist careers.

So, here we are. Music listening and enjoyment has never been higher, but per ‘unit’ (e.g., download, spin, etc.) income has never been lower. There are many reasons for this that I’m not going to delve into here. The simple fact is that, although I still deeply believe in the intrinsic value of the words, music, performance and recording skill embodied in sound recordings, a huge number of music consumers out there do not and will not pay for content alone. Yet, they will pay for plenty of things like live performances, unique or limited physical goods, convenience, preferential treatment, etc. But, apart from your pure talent and marketing savvy there is something else to be cultivated and, in a certain sense, sold. Your personal (or your band’s) brand. This means different things to different people but to me it’s simply letting people know who you are and what you stand for.

According to a study just released by Cone, LLC., 94% of consumers (your potential fans), will switch brands (remember, you’re a brand), to one that supports good causes. By communicating your true beliefs as part of your overall marketing strategy, you will gain a point of connection with potential fans that runs just as deep as your great new song or your awesome stage persona. And these fans will be much more likely to spend time and money in support of your career. Of course, actions speak louder than words and, at Dympol, we’ve spent a lot of time developing something called Charitable Checkout to make it easier for you to take action and win fan loyalty as a result.Being experts in managing fan relationships, the fine folks at FanBridge invited us to be among the first batch of companies to join their new Partner Ecosystem. Consequently, Charitable Checkout module enables you to partner with your fans to raise money for the worthy causes you support. In the process, this cause- marketing app gets your music heard; your good works recognized; and generates tons of positive social media exposure. When fans give to your causes, they get rewarded with free downloads (if you offer them), gift cards from sponsors, and they get thanked by you on their Facebook walls. Charitable Checkout can also live on your own website, blog and in the online stores that sell your content, merchandise and gig tickets. If you want us to get your Charitable Checkout widget into one of these other channels, just let us know. While doing good will not guarantee fame and fortune, it will make you and your growing fan base feel good about each other and, likely, increase your chances of making loyal fans for life.
